How to Find a Drupal or Joomla Theme
Where Drupal and Joomla name their themes in every page, and how to tell a default theme from a custom one.
Article Summary: To find a Drupal theme, search the page source for "ajaxPageState", whose theme value names the active theme, or for /themes/contrib/ and /themes/custom/ paths. To find a Joomla template, search for /templates/ or /media/templates/site/, where the folder name is the template. Olivero and Cassiopeia are the current defaults.
- Drupal pages include a drupal-settings-json block whose ajaxPageState theme value names the active theme.
- Drupal themes under /themes/contrib/ come from drupal.org, while /themes/custom/ means a site specific theme.
- Joomla 4 and later load templates from /media/templates/site/ and Joomla 3 from /templates/.
- Cassiopeia is the default Joomla 4 template and Olivero is the default Drupal front end theme.
Drupal and Joomla power many government, university and enterprise sites. Both name their active theme in every page, so a careful look at the page source is usually enough.
Drupal
Drupal sites usually include a JSON block called drupal-settings-json. Inside it, the ajaxPageState section names the active theme:
"ajaxPageState": {"libraries": "...", "theme": "olivero", "theme_token": null}That theme value is the theme's machine name. If the settings block is missing, look at the theme's file paths instead:
| Path | What it means |
|---|---|
/core/themes/olivero/ | A theme that ships with Drupal core |
/themes/contrib/name/ | A community theme from drupal.org |
/themes/custom/name/ | A theme built for this site |
/sites/all/themes/name/ | An older Drupal 7 site |
Olivero is Drupal's current default front end theme, and Claro is its admin theme. Bartik was the default before Olivero. A contributed theme usually has a page at drupal.org/project/ followed by its machine name.
Drupal sites also add data-drupal-selector attributes and often send an x-drupal-cache header, which confirm the platform even when the theme is hidden.
Joomla
Joomla calls its themes templates. Joomla 4 and later load template files from /media/templates/site/, while Joomla 3 loads them from /templates/:
/media/templates/site/cassiopeia/css/template.min.css
/templates/protostar/css/template.cssThe folder name is the template. Cassiopeia is the default template in Joomla 4 and later, and Protostar was the default in Joomla 3. Anything else is a third party or custom template. When we scanned joomla.org, it ran a template named after the project itself.
Joomla sites often include a generator tag that names Joomla and a joomla-script-options block.
TYPO3
TYPO3, popular in Europe, stores site themes as extensions, often called site packages. Look for /typo3conf/ext/ followed by the package name. Site packages are usually custom to each site.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which theme a Drupal site uses?
Search the page source for "ajaxPageState" and read its theme value. If it isn't there, look for /themes/contrib/ or /themes/custom/ followed by the theme's name.
What is the default Joomla template?
Cassiopeia is the default site template in Joomla 4 and later. Joomla 3 used Protostar.
Can I download the theme a Drupal site uses?
If it lives in /themes/contrib/, yes: it is a community theme available on drupal.org. Themes in /themes/custom/ were built for that site and aren't available.
