How to Find Out What Theme Any Website Is Using
The complete method for identifying any website's theme, platform by platform, and what to do when there is no theme to find.
Article Summary: To find what theme a website uses, paste its address into a theme detector, which identifies the platform first and then reads that platform's theme record. On Shopify the record is Shopify.theme, on WordPress it is the theme's style.css header, and on Magento, PrestaShop and Drupal it is the theme folder in asset paths.
- The first step is always identifying the platform, because each platform stores its theme name differently.
- Shopify and WordPress publish enough information to name the exact theme and version on almost every site.
- Wix, Squarespace 7.1, Webflow and Framer don't publish template names, so no tool can reveal them reliably.
- Large brands often run custom themes or headless front ends, which have no theme to buy.
You found a website with a design you love and want to know what it is built with. The answer comes in two parts: which platform runs the site, and which theme or template sits on top of it. Get the first right and the second usually follows.
Step one: identify the platform
Every platform leaves fingerprints. WordPress loads files from /wp-content/, Shopify serves images from /cdn/shop/, Squarespace pulls assets from static1.squarespace.com and Wix from wixstatic.com. Many sites also include a generator tag in their page head that names the platform outright.
A theme detector checks dozens of these signals at once. If you'd rather do it by hand, our guide on what CMS a website is using lists the signs for each platform.
Step two: read the platform's theme record
Once you know the platform, you know where its theme name lives.
| Platform | Where the theme is named | Reliability |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | The Shopify.theme record in the page source | Very high |
| WordPress | The theme folder's style.css header | Very high |
| WooCommerce | Same as WordPress, since it is a WordPress plugin | Very high |
| Magento | /static/frontend/Vendor/theme/ asset paths | High |
| PrestaShop | /themes/theme-name/assets/ paths | High |
| Drupal | The theme in Drupal's page settings | High |
| Joomla | /templates/name/ asset paths | High |
| Ghost | Theme assets, rarely named | Low |
| Squarespace, Wix, Webflow, Framer | Not published | None |
On Shopify and WordPress you can usually get the exact theme, its version and its author. Our dedicated guides explain how to find the Shopify theme and the WordPress theme step by step.
Step three: check whether the theme is for sale
A theme name alone isn't always something you can buy. Three outcomes are common:
- A commercial or free theme. Names like Dawn, Prestige, Astra or Divi. You can get the same theme today.
- An edited copy. The site started from a known theme and changed it. Get the original and make your own changes.
- A custom build. The theme is named after the brand or an agency project. It was made for that site alone.
When there is no theme to find
Some sites have no theme at all. Headless sites, which pair a platform like Shopify with a separate front end built in Next.js or Hydrogen, render pages with custom code. Site builders like Wix and Squarespace copy a template into each site and never publish its name. A good detector tells you which case you are looking at instead of returning a blank.
Doing it with the Chrome extension
The Any Theme Detector Chrome extension runs the same checks on the page you already have open. It reads the live page, so it also catches apps and scripts that load after the page opens. It runs only when you click it.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a tool that detects any website's theme?
Yes. Any Theme Detector identifies the platform and theme for Shopify, WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaShop, Drupal, Joomla and more, and explains when a platform doesn't publish theme names.
Can I find the template of a Wix or Squarespace site?
Usually not. Both copy a template into each site and don't publish its name. You can confirm the platform, then browse their template galleries for a close match.
How accurate are theme detectors?
On Shopify and WordPress, very accurate, because both platforms publish the theme's own name. Accuracy drops for renamed custom themes and for platforms that hide theme names entirely.
Is it legal to use the same theme as another website?
Yes, when you get the theme yourself from its seller or the official store. Copying another site's custom code, images or text is not allowed.
