How to Find a Magento, BigCommerce or PrestaShop Theme

Where each ecommerce platform keeps its theme name, with the exact paths to search for in the page source.

Magento, BigCommerce and PrestaShop themes

Article Summary: Magento, PrestaShop, OpenCart and Shopware 5 put their theme folder in every asset path, so the theme name appears in the page source. Search for /static/frontend/ on Magento, /themes/ on PrestaShop, catalog/view/theme/ on OpenCart and /themes/Frontend/ on Shopware 5. BigCommerce and Shopware 6 compile their themes, so the name is rarely visible.

  • Magento asset paths follow /static/frontend/Vendor/theme/locale/, which names the theme and its vendor.
  • Luma and Blank are Magento's default themes, and Hyvä is a popular modern alternative.
  • PrestaShop themes load from /themes/theme-name/assets/, and Classic is the default theme.
  • BigCommerce Stencil themes rarely publish their name in storefront markup.

Outside Shopify and WooCommerce, most open source store platforms are surprisingly easy to read. They load theme files from folders named after the theme, and those folder names appear in every page. BigCommerce and Shopware 6 are the exceptions.

Magento and Adobe Commerce

Magento serves its theme files through a path that names both the vendor and the theme:

/static/version1712345678/frontend/Vendor/theme/en_US/css/styles-m.css
A Magento static asset path

The two folders after frontend are the answer. Magento/luma is Luma, Magento's default demo theme, and Magento/blank is the bare starting theme. A vendor folder named Hyva means a Hyvä theme, a fast modern front end that many Magento stores now use. Any other vendor usually points to a theme company or the agency that built the store.

Search the page source for /static/ and frontend to find it yourself. Magento pages also include x-magento-init scripts, which confirm the platform.

PrestaShop

PrestaShop loads theme files from /themes/ followed by the theme folder:

/themes/classic/assets/css/theme.css
A PrestaShop theme path

classic is the default theme that ships with PrestaShop, and hummingbird is the newer default. Anything else is a third party or custom theme, and the folder name is usually close to the product name sold on theme marketplaces.

OpenCart

OpenCart keeps themes under catalog/view/theme/, followed by the theme folder. default is the stock theme. Commercial OpenCart themes usually keep their own folder names, which makes them easy to search for.

Shopware

Shopware 5 stores themes under /themes/Frontend/ followed by the theme name, with Responsive as the default. Shopware 6 compiles its theme into files with hashed names, so the theme name usually can't be seen from outside. A detector can still confirm the platform through Shopware's storefront bundles.

BigCommerce

BigCommerce stores use Stencil, its theme framework, and load files from BigCommerce's CDN. The storefront markup rarely names the theme. Many stores are built on Cornerstone, BigCommerce's free base theme, but customized past recognition. The detector confirms BigCommerce and lists the store's apps and payment tools, which often matters more than the theme name.

Moving platforms?

If you are researching competitors because you are choosing a platform, look beyond themes. Hosting, maintenance and apps make a bigger difference to running costs. Many merchants who start on Magento or PrestaShop later move to hosted platforms to reduce maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out what Magento theme a store uses?

Search the page source for "/static/" and "frontend". The two folders after "frontend" name the theme vendor and theme, such as Magento/luma or a Hyvä theme.

What is the default PrestaShop theme?

Classic is the long standing default theme, and Hummingbird is the newer default in recent versions.

Why can't I find the theme of a BigCommerce store?

BigCommerce compiles Stencil themes, and the storefront rarely includes the theme's name. You can confirm the platform and see its apps, but usually not the theme.
