How to Find a Squarespace, Wix or Webflow Template

Site builders don't publish template names. Here is what you can learn instead, and the fastest way to find a matching template.

Squarespace, Wix and Webflow templates

Article Summary: You usually can't find the exact template behind a Squarespace, Wix, Webflow or Framer site, because these builders copy the template into each site and never publish its name. You can confirm the platform with a detector, then find a close match in the builder's own template gallery.

  • Squarespace 7.1 sites share one flexible template system, so there is no template name to detect.
  • Wix copies a template into each new site, and the template's name is not stored in the published pages.
  • Webflow and Framer templates are cloned into new projects, and the copies don't keep the original name.
  • Squarespace still exposes a templateId value, which identifies the template family on older 7.0 sites.

Shopify and WordPress sites publish their theme names, which makes them easy to identify. Website builders work differently. When you start a site on Squarespace, Wix, Webflow or Framer, the builder copies a template into your project, and from then on it is simply your site. The template's name isn't kept anywhere a visitor can see.

That means any tool claiming to name the exact template of a Wix or Squarespace site is guessing. What you can find out is still useful.

Squarespace

Squarespace sites are easy to recognize: they load files from static1.squarespace.com and include a large settings object called Static.SQUARESPACE_CONTEXT. Any Theme Detector reads that object to confirm the platform and its version.

The version matters. Squarespace 7.0 used separate template families, each with its own features, and the settings object includes a templateId that points to the family. Squarespace 7.1, used by nearly all newer sites, replaced families with one flexible system: every 7.1 template can be restyled to look like any other. On a 7.1 site, there is no template left to identify.

How to find a match: browse the Squarespace template gallery and filter by the site's category. Pay attention to layout, not colors or fonts, which are quick to change.

Wix

Wix sites load from wixstatic.com and parastorage.com and usually include a Wix generator tag. Once you pick a template in Wix, it becomes a private copy, and the published pages don't reference the original.

How to find a match: search the Wix template gallery for the site's industry. Wix also lets designers build from a blank canvas, so many Wix sites don't match any template at all.

Webflow

Webflow sites carry data-wf-site and data-wf-page attributes and load assets from website-files.com. Templates from the Webflow marketplace are cloned into new projects, and the clone doesn't keep the template's name.

How to find a match: look for a "Made in Webflow" or template credit in the footer, which some designers leave in place. Otherwise, search the Webflow template marketplace by category and layout.

Framer

Framer sites load images and code from framerusercontent.com and usually include a Framer generator tag. Like Webflow, Framer templates are remixed into new projects without their original name.

How to find a match: browse the Framer template marketplace. Framer sites often use distinctive scroll animations, which make matches easier to spot.

What a detector still tells you

Even without a template name, a detector gives you the platform, the frameworks, analytics, chat tools, payment providers and hosting. For a site builder, that is often the real question: "Could I build this myself on the same platform?" If the answer is yes, the builder's gallery is the next stop.

Frequently asked questions

Can you find out what Squarespace template a website uses?

Only on older Squarespace 7.0 sites, through the templateId value. Squarespace 7.1 sites share one template system, so there is no template name to find.

Is there a Wix template detector?

Tools can confirm a site runs on Wix, but not which template it started from. Wix doesn't store the template name in published pages.

How do I find a Webflow template?

Check the footer for a template credit, then search the Webflow template marketplace by category and layout. The template name isn't published in the site's code.

Why do some tools claim to detect Wix templates?

They compare the design to known templates and guess. Without a published template name, no tool can confirm the match.
